Some of you may have been wondering what the heck I’ve been doing over the past few months other than ranting about Windows, Unity, and Oculus… I am proud to announce
the worlds first ‘VR Book’*
developed by yours truly written by Ken Maxon and published by ASJ Publishing: ‘A Chapter Finished…’.
I will eventually add this to the game sections, but for now you can download it directly from Oculus https://share.oculus.com/app/a-chapter-finished. 0.6+ SDK Required
The notion of creating a virtual reality book has daunted developers to say the least over the past few years due to latency, resolution and other issues with older development builds. It wasn’t until the recent release of the game engines Unity 5 and UE4 that a project like this would have even been feasible. Not to mention the transition to Windows 10 and the 0.7 SDK from Oculus. What we set out to create was an actual published book that could not only easily be read in virtual reality but with a moderate level of comfort to go along with the experience. My first thought was the motion sickness is going to make this impossible but after experimenting with some settings and atmosphere, fonts and aliasing, etc. what we have here is a book that is as easy read as an ebook! A bold claim, but see for yourself! (Though I wouldn’t recommend reading the whole book in one sitting for any first time users).
